Step by Step, in a Lifetime Journey

by Cristina Costache

“Life gives us white canvas and no instructions to follow; it’s our decision what our painting will look like. And, as in every memorable journey, destination is not a static point, but pure happiness for our souls. Come in this journey with us; we have no idea where it will take us, because once you start dreaming, there is nothing to stop you. And once you start making, hands will have no sleep.”

The beginning: first bag

Tired of black and brown shoes, few years ago I’ve started buying colorful shoes for colorful outfits. Very soon I realized that a new obsession came my way: I needed bags and accessories in the same colors, too. Where to get them from, to fit in style and in a young design?

In my walks, I found a leather shop, full of colorful leather, thread and accessories. That was leather heaven for me! I could sit there for hours: smelling, touching and… dreaming. There is where I bought my first square meter of leather years ago. And there is where I lost the notion of time in long stories with another leather addict, one of the shop employees, about each type of leather. Suede, nubuck or heritage leather was racket science for me. And so were leather thickness variations, elasticity or handcrafting techniques. Now they are my sweethearts.

I bought my first sewing machine (never had sewed before, but sewed my first bag in the first night…), watched tutorials, asked old leather professionals, guessed… I’ve added a new bag to my wardrobe every three or four weeks. I had thus a new hobby!

From leather scraps to leather jewels

I love leather so much that I cannot let scraps go. Since my first leather bag, I’ve collected them all till I finally had a plan for them. First, I started rolling them into beads. I kept rolling till a full box. Then the idea of making jewelry came to me. Leather beads necklaces, earrings and bracelets. The Leathermonds Collection came to light.

This was followed by leather flowers shaped using manual traditional techniques: scissors, water and fire. Each of those entirely handmade. And the story goes on with: leafs, tassels, geometric shapes, pop culture and any other idea may come. More about each collection here.

Latest love: clothing

I’m an Aquarius, and this should say everything. I’m more a dreamer than a doer. I get rid of my ideas even during having them. That is why I’m never happy enough with my achievement and I fill like doing more and more. And I do! Lately I’ve been up to my neck in learning tailoring pattern drawing, so you’ll see some new collections soon. Keep in touch!

to be continued…

I’m an Aquarius, and this should say everything. I’m more a dreamer than a doer. I get bored of my ideas even during having them. That is why I’m never happy enough with my achievement and I fill like doing more and more. So jewelry is just the beginnig.
